You rely on your windows to stay open when needed and to allow fresh air into your home. Windows that open by lifting on a track have mechanisms to keep the window open until it's pulled closed. If those mechanisms break, then the window will not stay open.

In this article, we'll talk about how to fix a window that won't stay up. Don't live with a window falling on its track - take steps to solve the problem. Below, we'll talk about parts of a window, how to fix a window that won't stay up, and residential window replacement. Here's what you need to know.

Identify the Problem with the Window Mechanism

The first thing to do when trying to fix a window that won't stay up is to identify the problem. Start by removing the sash from the frame. The sash is the part of the window that slides up and down.

If you have double hung windows, you'll have two moving sashes. You only need to remove the sash that won't stay up. Leave the other sash in place. Use a screwdriver to remove the stops inside the frame, then tilt the sash inward and remove it.

Inspect the Window Tracks and Springs

Inspect the window tracks and springs to look for problems. Clean the tracks with a damp cloth to find problems that could have caused the mechanisms in the window sash to break. While you're at it, check and adjust the window latch and lock mechanism.

Replace or Repair the Window Sash Balancer

Balances come in three types: block and tackle, constant force, and spiral. If any of these balances are broken, they'll need to be replaced.

Other Reasons Your Window Won't Stay Up

In addition to the balances being broken, there are other problems that could cause your window falling.

  • Pivot bar: The pivot bar connects the balances to hold the window in place while the window is open. Check the pivot bar. If it's snapped or bent, then it needs to be replaced.
  • Window shoe: Your window shoe is a metal or plastic block just inside the window frame. If it becomes cracked or broken, then pivot bar won't have anything to grip onto. Check the shoe to ensure it's in the proper spot and free from cracks. Replace the shoe if it is broken.

Test the Window for Proper Functionality

Once you've replaced the broken mechanisms, re-install the sash. Follow the same procedure that you used to remove the sash in reverse. Finally, move the sash up and down to test for proper functionality.

When is it Time to Replace Your Windows?

Fixing one or two broken windows can save you a lot of time and money if replacing your windows is the alternative. However, windows only last so long. Today's windows last between 15 and 30 years, depending on their quality and quality of installation. Here are some signs that it's time to replace your windows:

  • Drafts: Drafty windows are inefficient and can contribute to big energy bills. If your windows are drafty, consider having them replaced to improve your home's energy efficiency.
  • Foggy glass: Dual pane windows are tightly sealed to keep moisture out of the space between the two panes. When this seal breaks, your windows can fill up with moisture. This causes the glass to become foggy. While you can have windows with this problem repaired, if many of your windows are broken at once, this could be a sign that it's time to replace.
  • Aesthetic problems: Window trends change. If you're unhappy with the appearance of your windows, the only way to solve this problem is to have your windows replaced with windows in more attractive styles.
  • Difficulty opening and closing windows: Over time, the house around your windows may start to shift. If you have difficulty opening and closing your windows, this could be a sign that you need to replace them.
