Window installation can be a challenge for anyone who isn't experienced in the process. If you're a homeowner who is considering installing a window without help from a contractor, one of the things you'll need to know more about is nail fins and how they work.

A standard nail fin is a part of the window installation process, and must be handled properly to ensure that your windows are well-installed. Whether you're installing new construction windows or replacing existing windows, it's important to know what the standard nail fin is.

What are Window Nail Fins and Their Purpose?

Nailing fins are the strips installed on the exterior side of a window. Nailing fins have fastener holes where you can secure the window to the wall sheathing. Nailing fins help hold the window to the wall while the other parts of the window are installed.

Types of Nail Fins and Their Applications

There are two types of nail fins to know about.

Integral nail fins.

Integral nail fins are welded to the window frame in one solid piece. This forms a shell around the perimeter of the window. Vinyl windows are the only windows with integral fins.

Non-integral fins.

Window frames that are made of non-vinyl material have non-integral nailing fins. This means that the fins are not attached to the window as one solid piece. Instead, non-integral fins need to be sealed to the window during window installation.

Compared to integral fins, non-integral fins have some advantages. They can fold down during transport, so they're less likely to break. These fins can also be pushed into the rough opening from inside the structure, so bigger windows on upper floors are easier to install.

Benefits of Using Nail Fins in Window Installation

Nail fins are an important part of residential window installation. Standard nail fin installation works in conjunction with the weather resistant barrier and flashing around the window. This helps prevent infiltration from wind and water.
